Bristol, CT – I come to you today from behind enemy lines. I rode up to Connecticut with a friend who had a meeting at the evil empire, er, ESPN. So where better to see how the new draft quarterback analysis worked in its first week, than the home of Mel Kiper’s hair.

Polls, Continued
Earlier this week I wrote about how the polls are basically garbage. If you’re a traditional power you always get a little wiggle room in the polls, and head to head seems to never matter to voters in general. Of the three polls that are out right now, Coaches, AP and Harris, all three have problems that even the casual fan can make an argument about. It got this bartender thinking, why not start my own poll. I surely know just as much as an AP writer, who by » Read the rest of this entry «

Hoboken, NJ – This weekend was filled with upsets as I traveled to New Jersey for my vacation. Had a great time watching Dirty Sanchez and the Jets move to 3-0, now somewhat traumatized after seeing the telestrator in during the open on Monday Night Football. Remember when it was the yardstick of sports television. They miss you Mr. Don Ohlmeyer, it is just another game now. It wasn’t just another game for a lot of teams over the weekend in college football.

The Beach, FL – Polls, polls, polls! Are you as tired of hearing about these as me? And guess what today the Harris Poll came out, that’s right the one we’ve all been waiting on. The only one that matters, the BCS isn’t out yet. The BCS might get a lot of things wrong, but they sure have this right, wait until the season is in full force to put a poll out. To this point nine teams that were ranked in the top ten have lost, which means they probably weren’t a top ten team to begin with.

Dilworth, NC – When I stepped behind the bar last night, the owner of the bar I work at, Eric, brought up what a great match-up we had tonight with South Carolina taking on Mississippi in Columbia. It ended up being a great game. Eric had pointed out what a stud Jevan Snead is at quarterback at Ole Miss, and that the Cocks sophomore Stephen Garcia is getting better. As we chatted, as we normally do about football, we came to the conclusion that a lot of who we think is going to win or lose is based on the quarterback. Not sure how true this is, so why not study it a little.

Dilworth, NC – Happy birthday Bruce Springsteen. Sixty years-old, wow, I think that makes us all feel old. In honor of the Boss’ Birthday and the start of his tour next Wednesday night in Giants Stadium, I thought it would fun to pair up current sports stories with Springsteen songs. So here we give it a try.

Dilworth, NC – Congratulations to The Young Bartender for the arrival of his new daughter. He is a father for the first time, my daughter recently turned nine. So here is raising a Newcastle for the new pops. Being a guy that has spent four decades around sports and sports guys, having a little girl changes your perspective. You are suddenly watching gymnastics, dance class, at swim meets. You are also thinking about college.

Spokane, WA – Yes a weird spot to be talking Buckeyes, but the farther you get away from Columbus, the clearer things become. Is it time to start thinking about offering Urban Myer $10 million a year to come home and coach the Buckeyes? Yes. Once again, a Jim Tressel coached Buckeyes team looked more boring than Woody Hayes and his old offenses. The difference, » Read the rest of this entry «

Spokane, WA – As I crossed the country yesterday to start a five day road trip filled with combat sports, a blurb in USA Today caught my attention. Ichiro Suzuki crossed a threshold that no other has ever reached, nine consecutive 200 hit seasons. A shot of Mac 25 to you Ichiro, in nine Major League Seasons, 200 hits in every one. Since there are no races at the moment, I thought I should take a moment to look into how amazing this is.
